Voting in the Dark

AN NYC BLOG

This blog and my podcast, “Strong Reception,” are here to shed light on New York’s draconian voting system and what we can do to bring it into the 21st century. I also talk about music history because that’s super important too and I love it.

Introducing my new podcast: Strong Reception with Eli James

I’m excited to announce the debut of my new podcast, Strong Reception with Eli James.

Check out the first episode, A Brooklyn Bereft, in which I cover what went down in the canceled race for New York’s 37th City Council District.

For this episode, I talked with Sandy Nurse, one of the candidates who was booted from the ballot during the height of New York’s COVID-19 confusion and horror. Nurse's campaign was just starting to gather momentum — even collecting some high-powered endorsements from folks like AOC — when the race was abruptly jettisoned amid petition challenges and some questionable executive decisions. We discussed what happened during this race, and how the actions of a powerful few left an underserved Brooklyn community without representation during an acute crisis.

For a full explanation of what happened in this City Council race, read my article: “How a New York City Council District was Handed an Unelected Leader.
